Loader Compressor - NPORS Construction Plant

A loader compressor is an item of plant that combines a loading shovel with a compressor unit on the back of it. It is used primarily for highway works whereby operators use attachments such as a breaker with the compressor on the back to break up highway surfaces and then operate the loading shovel to pick up the debris created from using the breaker. The material is then loaded into a skip or lorry for removal off site or recycling.

This course is aimed at operators who want or require a formal qualification for the safe and efficient use and handling of a Loader Compressor. Safely operating this piece of equipment requires attention and skill to protect everyone involved. This course delivers the necessary skills, knowledge, and understanding to operate the Loader Compressor safely. It is specifically aimed at operators who want or require a formal qualification for the safe and efficient operation of a Loader Compressor.

Throughout this course we will take the candidate through the training material and support their development, ensuring they are trained to the national occupational standards set by the awarding organisation, NPORS. Through a mix of practical and theory-based assessments, candidates will cover manufacturer instructions, safe procedures and responsibilities while participating in practical plant operating activities and best practice conducted on site. The training and assessments follow national standards and is fully accredited by NPORS.

By the end of this course the candidate can expect to have an understanding of the following:
Latest relevant legislation – specific to Plant Operators
Understanding the dangers of working in the industry, & their responsibilities as a plant operator on site
Working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the Loader Compressor
Inspections prior to use and carry out all pre-operational and running checks
Understanding the instruments and controls (including structural parts)
Identify, fit and remove air hoses and attachments
Understanding of the Machine Systems
Configure the vehicle and loader crane ready for travel
Back fill the excavated area correctly
Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely across varying terrain in open and confined areas
All environmental considerations & the impact of using a Loader Compressor
Load Dumper, Rear Dump Truck, Tipper Lorry or similar with the spoil
The major components of the Loader Compressor and explaining their functions
Break out area ready for stockpiling
Carry out pre loading checks
Build a spoil heap on firm level ground
Carry out shut down procedures

The delivery of this course will be primarily practical through machine operating sessions along with a classroom-based training and assessment. To achieve the qualification, the candidate will need to attend and complete both the theory and practical assessments. Our occupationally competent trainers will carry out delivery of the training / assessments with the candidate and complete the session with an NPORS practical observation and a short question paper.

This course can be delivered at our training centre or at a location suitable to you, providing it meets with the awarding body requirements. This can be discussed and agreed prior to booking the course.

On successfully achieving a pass mark on both components the candidate will qualify for either an NPORS / CSCS Construction Plant Operator Card, valid for two years or a Traditional Operators card, valid for three to five years depending on sector-specific or in-company requirements.

If you don’t require a nationally accredited qualification and just need to comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act, then why not choose a Construct Training Services In house certificate, and benefit from a more cost efficient training and assessment route?

The training and assessment options for NPORS accredited courses vary to accommodate novices and experienced candidates.

  • Novice training - 3 Days with a maximum of 3 novice candidates with 1 machine
  • Refresher training – 1 Day with a maximum of 3 experienced candidates with 1 machine
