Overview

Lorry loaders are widely used in construction and utility works, street works, machinery, container, and portable unit transportation. Essentially a crane mounted on a vehicle for loading on-site, it is the mobile solution for lifting operations required on site. Lorry loaders can be remotely controlled or operated manually with one of the following attachments and accessories: Clamshell Bucket (Grab), Crane Swivel (Hook) and Brick/Block (Clamp)

This course is aimed at people who want or require a formal qualification for the safe and efficient operation of a Lorry Loader - Hook. Safely operating this piece of equipment requires attention and skill to protect everyone involved. This course delivers the necessary skills, knowledge, and understanding to operate the Lorry Loader – Hook safely. It is specifically aimed at operators who want or require a formal qualification for the safe and efficient operation of a Lorry Loader - Hook.

Throughout this course we will take the candidate through the training material and support their development, ensuring they are trained to the national occupational standards set by the awarding organisation, NPORS. Through a mix of practical and theory-based assessments, candidates will cover manufacturer instructions, safe procedures and responsibilities while participating in practical plant operating activities and best practice conducted on site. The training and assessments follow national standards and is fully accredited by NPORS.

Programme

By the end of this course the candidate can expect to have an understanding of the following:
Latest relevant legislation – specific to Plant Operators
Understanding the dangers of working in the industry, & their responsibilities as a plant operator on site
All environmental considerations & the impact of using a Lorry Loader - Hook
Working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the Lorry Loader - Hook
Inspections prior to use and carry out all pre-operational and running checks
Understanding of the Machine Systems
Understanding the instruments and controls (including structural parts)
The major components of the Lorry Loader and explaining their functions
Configure the vehicle and loader crane ready for travel
Minimise load swing and ensure load security on the vehicle
Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely across varying terrain in open and confined areas
Manoeuvre the machine to the work area and correctly configure in readiness to carry out lifting duties
Correctly deploy the stabilisers according to stated manufacturer's specifications
Comply with all requirements for rated capacity indicators or load moment indicators
Identify weights and centres of gravity of loads to be used
Carry out lifting operations using the full capabilities of the loader crane
Position loads accurately at designated locations including onto and from the vehicle
Identify, fit and remove various attachments
Carry out shut down procedures

Course

Delivery

The delivery of this course will be primarily practical through machine operating sessions along with a classroom-based training and assessment. To achieve the qualification, the candidate will need to attend and complete both the theory and practical assessments. Our occupationally competent trainers will carry out delivery of the training / assessments with the candidate and complete the session with an NPORS practical observation and a short question paper.

This course can be delivered at our training centre or at a location suitable to you, providing it meets with the awarding body requirements. This can be discussed and agreed prior to booking the course.

Certification

On successfully achieving a pass mark on both components the candidate will qualify for either an NPORS / CSCS Construction Plant Operator Card, valid for two years or a Traditional Operators card, valid for three to five years depending on sector-specific or in-company requirements.

The training and assessment options for NPORS accredited courses vary to accommodate novices and experienced candidates.

  • Novice training - 2 Days with a maximum of 3 novice candidates with 1 machine
  • Refresher training – 1 Day with a maximum of 3 experienced candidates with 1 machine
  • Assessment only – 1 Day session with a maximum of 4 experienced candidates with 1 machine

Additional

Information

Candidates will need to provide valid proof of identity on the first day of the course, such as a copy of their passport or driving licence. They will also need to provide their own PPE and be wearing it as required. All Certification fees are included in the course cost and the candidates will need to attend the full duration of the course to be awarded the certificate.

Candidates must inform their trainer if they have any serious health issues, physical problems, special considerations or are taking any medication, which may affect their abilities to operate plant safely when carrying out any elements of the training.

If training is to be held at your chosen location, please ensure that the classroom area you make available has a power supply and is a suitable size for the number of candidates attending. In addition, please ensure that the practical area has been risk assessed and is safe and meets the requirements of NPORS for the training required.
